Sotogrande (10 minutes - 10 km)
Sotogrande has one of the most glamorous harbours in Andalusia with space for 545 yachts from 8 to 100 metres. In Sotogrande there is a wide range of excellent restaurants (Ké Soto, Foodisiac, Bokana, Pura Tapa,...).
With its colorful stalls and fine selection of antiques, clothing and foodstuffs, the Sunday market of Sotogrande is one of the most stylish and charming of its kind in the coastal region.
The pride of Sotogrande is the Santa Maria Polo Club. Every year in August a large international tournament is held there with teams from all over the world.
Gibraltar (20min - 15km)
Gibraltar is a small piece of Great Britain located in Spain.
Curiously, the border between the countries is an airport runway. The Rock with a height of 426m overlooks 'The Strait of Gibraltar', which connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Atlantic Ocean. There are different ways to get to the Rock of Gibraltar by cable car, by foot or by tourist bus. At the top is a nature reserve. There is also a Moorish castle from which you have a beautiful view.
The monkeys are the attraction of Gibraltar, they are the only monkeys left in the wild in Europe. They originally come from Africa. As soon as you step on the rock, you will be greeted by these enthusiastic and curious animals, keep an eye on your stuff because they love everything that is edible. You can finish off in one of the typical English pubs.
Estepona (25 minutes - 35 km)
Estepona is definitely worth a visit. It is recommended to take the A-7 motorway and not the toll road AP-7. The A-7 winds along the coastline and has some great vista points.
Highly recommended is the rooftop bar Bermeja views, located on the 7th floor of the Boutique Hotel El Pilar Andalucia which offers great views of the white houses and mountains. One floor down there is also a delicious Asian restaurant (best to book in advance). Two more favorite restaurants are Casa del Rey (a wine restaurant with a beautiful patio) and Ancla Sea Bridge with a 180 degree panoramic sea view.
The Orchidarium is also definitely worth a visit. There you will find more than 4,000 different types of orchids from all over the world.
Tarifa (40 minutes - 45 km)
Tarifa is the southernmost town in Europe and is located on the Strait of Gibraltar. This is the point where the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meet. On the side of the Atlantic Ocean you will find very long white sandy beaches where you will undoubtedly find a lot of kite surfers.
Punta Paloma is an absolute must, this is a large white sand dune from where you have a fantastic view of Valdevaqueros beach and the African coastline.
Marbella (45 minutes - 65 km)
For glamour and glitz, Marbella is not inferior to the French Riviera and has everything you desire from a luxury beach destination: There are Michelin-starred restaurants, marinas full of luxury yachts, golf courses, designer boutiques and beautiful sandy beaches.
No wonder celebrities and millionaires have been coming here for decades. For the curious, there are plenty of little discoveries to make around the resort. Things to be sure to visit are: Puerto Banus, Plaza de los Naranjos, The Old Town,...
Malaga (1h10 min - 110 km)
Located on the Costa del Sol, Malaga has an average of 320 days of sunshine per year and is the fifth largest city in Spain.
Malaga's cathedral is one of the most striking sights.You can see the cathedral's tower from almost anywhere in the city. A few more things to add to the bucket list are Gibralfaro Castle, Alcazaba Castle and the Teatro Romano.
Fans of museums are also in the right place in Malaga. The museum of one of the most famous painters of all time Pablo Picasso is the most famous. Also the Centre Pompidou of Malaga in the port, with as eye-catcher the colorful cube.
Ronda (1h20 - 100 km)
Ronda is highly recommended and a great day trip. Ronda is a beautiful village, situated on a mountain top (at an altitude of 739m), with dazzling views of a deep gorge. This gorge (El Tajo) separates the approximately 15th century new town from the old town, which dates back to Moorish rule. Puente Nuevo (97m high), a stone bridge over the gorge, has a vantage point with stunning views.
Plaza de Toros in the new city, a legendary 18th-century arena, is one of the city's most recognizable places.
Seville (2h - 200km)
A nice start to a visit to Seville is a walk on the Metropol parasol. The wooden construction is the largest in the world. Seville is called an 'open air museum' by many and is full of historical monuments, churches, parks and palm gardens, remnants of many different cultures.
Seville is known for its varied cuisine, the large number of restaurants, bars and pubs and also for the fact that they have a hot meal twice a day. The Sevillians really take their time for eating and love an aperitif and/or tapa beforehand.
Granada (2h20 - 240 km)
Why visit Granada?
In two words: "The Alhambra" this is the most famous building in all of Spain. That this is not one of the Seven Wonders of the World is a mystery. For a visit to the Alhambra you should take 4 to 5 hours, it is very extensive. Be sure to take the time to visit the Palacio Nazaries, this is the icing on the cake. Be sure to buy your tickets in advance.
However, Granada is much more than just the Alhambra. It is a large and lively student city in Spain with +/- 50.000 students because of the prestigious Universidad de Granada. This student life ensures that Granada is a city with a vibrant nightlife and trendy bars.
